CAD Professional Versus Professional Engineer

Do you sometimes find it difficult to see the difference between a CAD Designer and a Professional Engineer? Each plays a vital role on the design team. They both use similar skills sets to design the product, but their responsibilities are quite different. A very experienced CAD Operator or Designer may indeed ask the question what is the difference between themselves and an Engineer.

In many situations the Designer is far more experienced than the engineer. Why is the engineer necessary, if the designer draws the plans, and the engineer only checks off? Ever had a designer ask why he needs a license to practice as an engineer. He knows everything and more than any engineer. But once they know the difference many would say that they do not want the responsibility of the engineer.

One of the important management skills in the business of engineering is to have a sufficient number of engineers and CAD professionals on a project or projects meeting a prescribed ratio to maintain a competitive advantage over the competition. Large companies can reach this ratio much easier than smaller business. Larger firms can shuffle individuals from various departments to form new design teams or to strengthen existing design teams. Smaller firms general rely on the utilization of multiple skill sets from their staff, which assists the company in taking on several different types of jobs.

The ratio of Professional Engineer and CAD Professionals is directly related to the salary and benefits of each job position and the type of project. The average salary for a CAD Operator is roughly $44K, a CAD Designer is about $60K, and a Project Engineer is about $68K. A design team of 10 individuals normally consist of one Project Engineer, 2-3 CAD Designers, and 6 to 7 CAD Operators with various levels of skills and experiences.

Professional Engineer

The role of the engineer is well defined for designs that require a state registered Professional Engineer to stamp and sign a set of plans. In this case engineer is in a responsible role and supervises the design process. They are responsible to check all calculations and designs whether done by hand or by software, and not only the work they have done but all of the work that others have done on the design. With a few exceptions no one can use the title of engineer without having graduated from and engineering college. In cases were you are stamping and signing design plans only an individual registered as a Professional Engineer in that state can us the title.

The Professional Engineer performs two major roles on the Design Team; manager and engineer. There are situations were the team manager is a non-engineer, but this requires a highly skilled manager that is able to manage without making design decisions. A Professional Engineer is required by State law to supervise all designs that he stamps and signs. This why in most cases the Project Manager, leader of the design team, also holds a Professional Engineering license.

Large design teams may actually have both a Project Manager and a Project Engineer. The Project Manager is responsible for all actions and work products of the team, and is responsible for all managerial actions. The Project Engineer is responsible for all designs, CAD work, and calculations that they may have done or the team has done. A good Project Engineer will duple check all work product and CAD Work of the team. The team may several Project Engineers each responsible for their own projects.

In smaller teams the Professional Engineer is called upon to perform two roles; the Project Engineer and the Project Manager. The teams are usually 5 or less individuals. In these situations, the engineer is not only responsible for the design and all work product produced by the team, but also he has a supervisory role over the entire team.

Most engineers have excellent technical skills, but not necessarily the same level of expertise in management. It is responsibility of the engineer to develop these management skills through continuing education. This continuing education can be obtained through Community Colleges, Universities, Professional Training Programs, Professional Organizations, and online training courses. In most states these continuing education courses qualify for continuing education units (CEU) or Professional Development Hours (PDH).

CAD Professional

CAD professional is often referred to as a CAD drafter or designer. A CAD Professional does not assume the responsibility of a state registered Professional Engineer. Although subject to company policies and industry reputation, CAD Professionals do not carry a state license that is subject to a State Board review or disciplinary action, or are they liable in a lawsuit. Yet any experienced CAD Designer is indispensable in engineering design firm. Their knowledge of the CAD software speeds up the design process, allowing the firm to perform more work in less time. Their year of design experience in various aspects of engineering enhances the design firm expertise in dealing with unusual designs.

It takes many years to become a good CAD Designer for and engineering firm. The transition from CAD operator to Designer can be too difficult for many. The designer knows the CAD software inside and out and has a big tool box of solutions for almost any design problem. Their years of experience make them invaluable in any engineering form. Usually the designer takes on several roles training and over seeing the CAD Operators, and handling the brunt of the major computer aided design options. Basic CAD work and plan revisions are generally handled by the CAD Operators.

Typically a Designer does have a technical degree from a Community College, and may even be certified by an official organization as an expert CAD Designer. CAD Designers have opportunities in a vast array of professions not only engineering. Some of the other fields that require their services are architecture, product design, graphic design, 3D animation, and game design.

So, is there a real difference between Designers and Professional Engineers? Well of course there is. Both are an important of the design team, yet their roles and responsibilities are quite different.

Productive Differences - Engineer Versus Medical Specialist

In what way are engineers similarly productive to medical specialists? The field of the engineer is in design, repair and development of systems and products. The medical specialist is wholly dedicated to the repair (cure) of the human body (or mind).

As the former craftsmen were organized in guilds, the modern engineer is organized in bodies of competences, like "FEANI: the voice of Europe's Engineers." One of their products is to standardize the field of the engineer, so that engineers from different countries in Europe can exchange their work.

Medical specialists are organized in similar bodies, with one difference: the medical specialist must maintain its skills and this is prominent in the body: "maintenance of certification" (2). The engineer must update his knowledge on new technological development, but there is no harm if his skills are not used for a while. The medical specialist on the other hand will loose on agility for example with can be dangerous in curing patients.

"The universe of" engineering is related to science, technology, and innovation. (1)
Science is "the body of, and quest for," fundamental knowledge and understanding of natural and man-made objects; their structure, properties, and how they behave. (1) There is a difference between "Pure Science" and "Applied Science" that serves a specific knowledge.

The medical universe is similarly built-up: science, technology and innovation. In medical technology the engineer will collaborate with the specialist in sharing knowledge.

The definition of Engineering is -- from the same organization -- the knowledge required, and the process applied, to conceive, design, make, build, operate, sustain, recycle or retire, something of significant technical content for a specific purpose; - a concept, a model, a product, a device, a process, a system, a technology. (1)

To come up with a definition of a medical specialist is more complicated. There are specialists for different field - similar to engineering. But would knowledge and process to apply not equally match for the medical specialist too: knowledge in the domain (oncology, gynecology, surgery, etc) and the process of repair (cure) a body (patient).

The side also offers a definition on Technology: "an enabling package of knowledge, devices, systems, processes, and other technologies, created for a specific purpose." The word technology is usually used to describe a complete system, a capability, or a specific device.
Medical technology is also related to engineering. The Surgery robots for example use technology to perform surgery. These robots are designed by medical specialist and engineers.

Innovation is not limited to the field of the engineer. Also the medical specialist is innovative. But in both cases it is about "the successful introduction of something new." In a business context it relates to something of practical use, with significant technical content and offers a commercial success. Outside the market (in society as a whole) innovation is about improvements in the quality of life.

Palliative care is an example of an innovative improvement in medicine where the quality of life of patients is improved during or after their cure.

Very important are also the two main components of engineering: engineering knowledge, the "know what", and engineering process, the "know how".


Engineering Knowledge - is the growing body of facts, experience and skills in science, engineering and technology disciplines; coupled to an understanding of the fields of application.
Engineering Process - is the creative process which applies knowledge and experience to seek one or more technical solutions to meet a requirement, solve a problem, and then exercise informed judgment to implement the one that best meets constraints.(1)

What about the know-what and know-how of the medical specialist. And more important how does this affect the organization?

The productivity profile of both the engineer and the specialist is quite similar. Both work on curing a problem (disease or technical fault), they organize resources to solve this by using other expertise and resources (assistance, other medical specialists like radiology, etc) and they can coach or teach others in their job on medical subjects.

Medical specialists however are more than engineers directly involved in client contact. The engineer works for a sponsor who wants to solve an issue. The medical specialist works directly for the client who is also the patient. Informing the client (sponsor) on the work to be done is however in both cases not always the first priority nor the best competence of the engineer / specialist.

Teamwork is also for both the engineer and specialist a recurring challenge. Both are very capable of solving issues themselves, although the world (technology and problems) becomes more complex that the individual problem solver needs to address others more and more.
Innovation is likely a topic that will be valued different too by either. The engineer wants to use new technology because it means progress in his job and career. But this can be different for the person behind the engineer or specialist. Some are more innovation-prone than others. Innovation requires the development of new practices and old experience becomes obsolete. Think about the surgeon who will change from traditional manual surgery towards computer assisted surgery. Both methods are not compatible on the long term.

How an Engineer folds a T-Shirt

I know what I'm doing this weekend UPDATE: To the sudden explosion of people who commented on this, allow me to clarify a few things. I'm not an engineer, I am a nerd and do like making odd stuff like this occasionally. I made one of these devices using this vid and posted it up here so a mate of mine in Canada could see it. To the people leaving rather idiotic comments about me needing a life, to each his own, but someone did this in plastic and is probably making millions. I didn't make the video, something I should have clarified, I don't own the company shown, and yes I know they use em in department stores, that would be where I got the idea of making my own, seeing as this probably took bit of nutting out to make I think it qualifies as engineering, as most engineers I know like complex solutions to simple problems Lastly, it's a bit of fun. Remember that? Or is a pre-requisite to have all whimsy forcibly extracted when you get an internet connection?

Things Need To Consider In Trusses Inspection For Civil And Structural Engineer

When the design of trusses has been approved from engineer, trusses fabrication will commence. Upon completion of fabrication, trusses will deliver to site for construction. As a civil and structural engineer, one of the duties of engineer is to inspect the trusses.

After trusses deliver to site, site agent or engineer needs to verify the quality of timber product. Timber has to be treated to avoid attack by termite. Normally the color of pressure treated wood is in green color. Whenever a section of timber is being cut, it will show that the green color will penetrate into certain depth of timber. Certificate of treated timber must be obtained from timber supplier. It needs for record purpose.

Then timber trusses have to check on the timber defect such as rotten timber, damage timber. Any defect found must be rejected immediately. The checking on timber is done by visual inspection. Whenever timber quality not to satisfaction, engineer can request for sample testing to any approved laboratory.

Timber sizing is important. Engineer needs to check the timber sizes. It to ensure that the sizes provided are according to trusses design sizes. It can carry out by using measuring tape. Sometime, it is impossible to insect every single item of timber. Therefore, engineer has to base on his best knowledge to have random sampling inspection. One of the ways is to inspection on the critical trusses such as big truss.

Engineer needs to check on trusses connection. There are two types of connection. First is gang nail plate and conventional bolts and nuts. For the later case, engineer must visually inspection the bolt holes. It is common that contractor simply drill holes for bolts. Unfortunately, some inexperience contractor drills the hole just near to edge of timber member (5-10mm from edge of member). This hole will easy loosen out from timber and affect the integrity of timber truss structure. The position of bolt holes on timber is important. It must according to trusses design.

Before erection of trusses to roof structure such as roof beams, the level of roof beams has to adjust to allow trusses to rest on roof beams. Inconsistency of roof level has to avoid.

After the trusses have been erected up to roof structure, engineer must ensure that the vertically of trusses have been achieved. Position of trusses such as trusses spacing must according to design drawing. Trusses supports are important. As for example, if a truss has four supports, engineer has to ensure that these four supports have been installed. It to ensure that roof loading has been transferred to roof structure. If roof level is inconsistency; in order to achieve supports condition for truss, some irresponsible contractor will use small element such as broken timber to insert between timber truss and roof structure. It is not a permanent structure. After the trusses have been erected, the broken timber will be loosen some days.

Truss to truss connection must has special precaution. Trusses have to connect by using MS plate or other proper structure. Nailing has to avoid in trusses.

Any change in timber structure arrangement need to has attention of designer. Do not allow any modification of trusses without approval from design office.

Whenever there is some dispute at site cannot be resolved, try to work it out at office. If contractor at site do not want to follow engineer instruction, do not argue with contractor. Else it may end up with quarrel; sometime with fighting. Therefore, leave the site immediately.
